Quacks in the ice
Open water is becoming a rarer commodity in these days of high winds and low temperatures, as the ubiquitous flat-billed denizens of Lake Mendota have discovered. While university studies say the lakes are icing over later and thawing earlier than ever before in recorded weather history, try telling that to the waterborne webfoots paddling in arctic agua off Union Terrace. Brrrr. (Photo: Jeff Miller)
