Reading expert to speak Aug. 6

“What Scientific Research Tells Us About Reading and Reading Instruction” will be the topic of a talk at the university Friday, Aug. 6, by Reid Lyon of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHHD).

Lyon will speak at 9 a.m. in Memorial Union. Check Today in the Union listing at entrances for room location.

Lyon is chief of the Child Development and Behavior Branch of NICHHD, part of the National Institutes of Health. In his talk he will summarize research findings of the last 35 years and discuss how they can be used for early identification of reading difficulties.

His speech is a preconference presentation of the 1999 Wisconsin Summer Conference on Effective Instruction, to be held Aug. 9-11 with the theme of “Reading is Power!” More than 100 educators will attend the conference, sponsored by the School of Education and UW Extension.
