Provost seeks ideas for second year of Baldwin grants

August 26, 2003

The provost’s office is seeking proposals from faculty, staff and students for the second annual Ira and Ineva Reilly Baldwin Wisconsin Idea Endowment.

Applicants should submit preproposals to their respective deans or directors no later than Friday, Oct. 3. Preproposal finalists will be announced Oct. 28.

This year, the university will grant approximately $500,000 for projects that begin on or after Jan. 12, 2004, when the awards will be announced. Proposals for initiatives with up to $100,000 total funding are encouraged, and projects may last for up to three years.

The endowment is funded by an $18 million gift from the estate of Ira and Ineva Reilly Baldwin, former UW–Madison administrators who dedicated their lives to public service. The endowment is intended to advance the Wisconsin Idea through the development of new and innovative initiatives, as well as enhance existing outreach activities. Such efforts will help to create partnerships and extend the knowledge, resources, research expertise and services of the university to community and governmental organizations, business and industry, the general public and K-12 schools.

Guidelines, forms, timelines and a list of 2003 funded programs cab be found online.
