Provost announces vice chancellor transition

May 10, 2006

Provost Patrick Farrell has announced that Professor Virginia (Gina) Sapiro will step down from her role as associate vice chancellor for teaching and learning on Aug. 1.

Sapiro has served in the role since fall 2002; she also served as interim provost from November to April of this academic year.

“On behalf of the campus community, I wish to express my sincere thanks and deep gratitude to Gina for her numerous contributions to the university in her role as AVC and for her leadership as interim provost. She initiated a number of projects that will have a lasting impact on the education of our students and the life of this campus,” Farrell says.

A search committee for the vice chancellor position will be formed soon, Farrell says, and he expects an early September deadline for applications and nominations. The person in the position traditionally serves for three to five years at 50 to 75 percent time, with the expectation that the faculty member will continue to teach and stay involved in her or his department, although Farrell says the initial appointment percentage is flexible.

Ideally, Farrell says, the selected individual will begin in the position by the start of spring semester 2007.

“I encourage you to begin considering faculty colleagues you wish to nominate for this role,” Farrell says.
