Private dorms chip in for Japan relief

April 8, 2011 By Susannah Brooks

As relief efforts continue in the aftermath of Japan’s earthquake and tsunami, another group of University of Wisconsin–Madison students is stepping up to provide support.

Residents of the Towers apartments and Statesider private residence hall have been conducting a week of charity events to support ongoing efforts in Japan. Working in conjunction with the existing Japanese Tsunami Relief student organization, all donations will benefit the Japanese relief fund through the Red Cross.

“Our student groups came to a consensus that they wanted to celebrate Japanese culture while providing support,” says Liz Blackbourn, leasing agent for the Statesider and Towers. “I’ve also worked overseas and have a number of Japanese friends, so when this idea came up we were excited at the chance to help.”

Throughout the week, monetary donations are being collected at both the Towers (502 N. Frances St.), and Statesider (505 N. Frances St.). Donation tables are being set up in the main lobby areas.

Today, Friday, April 8th, residents will sponsor a blood drive from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. The event will take place at the Wisconsin Lutheran Chapel, 220 W. Gilman Street.

Also on Friday, April 8th, the “Jam for Japan” dance party will take place between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. at the Towers. Admission is a $5 donation at the door; additional donations will be accepted throughout the evening. This non-alcoholic event is open to all UW–Madison students.
