Play wrestles with balancing individual, community

April 22, 2003

The delicate and difficult interplay between the rights of the individual and the needs of larger community will be explored in the Department of German‘s production of “Das Kontingent.”

Written in 2000 by a theater collective under the pseudonym Soeren Voima, the play delves into the complexities of international politics. Visiting artist Manfred Roth, a staple of German theater, is directing the play.

About 15 UW–Madison students are involved with the play, which will be performed at 7:30 p.m., Monday-Wednesday, April 28-30, in the Memorial Union Play Circle. Roth will precede each performance with an introduction in English at 6:45 p.m. He also will provide an opportunity for questions and discussion at the conclusion of the play. All performances are free and open to the public. Reservations are recommended. Contact the Department of German, 262-2192.
