Photographers comment on Moments in Time 2017: ‘I second that emotion’

December 14, 2017

JEFF MILLER:

I’m Jeff Miller, the senior photographer in University Communications. This is the 11th year for Moments in Time, a series my colleague Bryce Richter and I started in 2007 and have continued working on together. This is more of a personal reflection for Bryce and I of some of our favorite moments and the things we’ve seen and captured on campus.

When I think back to 2017 and look through some of our imagery, there was a lot of roller-coaster emotions with highs and lows. But I think the one theme that did come through for me was the privilege of being able to work with people who trust me to tell their story.

One of those moments was with University Police Assistant Chief Kari Sasso, when she was getting ready to put down her longtime [equestrian] partner, Vegas, who was struggling with a terminal illness. And I had access to be able to be behind the scenes and share that moment, both for her and the university.

A second moment of trust came for me in June when Lori Berquam, the vice provost for student life and dean of students for UW, asked if I would make a portrait of her to go along with a letter she wanted to write reflecting on the fact that she had reached the midway point in her chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer and was feeling really optimistic about her days ahead. That was really touching to be able to photograph Dean Berquam.

And both of these people allowed me into their worlds to tell their story, and I appreciate that trust very much.

BRYCE RICHTER:

My name is Bryce Richter. I’m a photographer with University Communications here at UW–Madison. I always enjoy the opportunity to look back on the past year and reflect on the moments that I had the pleasure of capturing.

I think the photos this year show one of the greatest things about being here at the UW is the people that make this place home. It’s an honor to observe and capture the exciting things the faculty and staff, students and the alumni of the UW engage in every day. This truly is a special place, and I can’t wait to see what we can do in 2018.
