April 26, 2010 By John Lucas

The Alpha Chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa Society at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, recently welcomed its 2010 initiates in a ceremony held at the Wisconsin Historical Society, followed by a reception and banquet.

Chancellor Biddy Martin congratulated the 173 new inductees from the university amid the parents, family and friends of selected students.

“I’m honored to join the many distinguished members of Phi Beta Kappa,” says Allison Aul, a new member of the society. “The other new inductees and I will do our best to live up the reputations of our talented peers from a wide variety of disciplines.”

Phi Beta Kappa is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious honor society that is open to students in all disciplines. The society was founded in 1776 during the American Revolution, celebrating and advocating excellence in the liberal arts and sciences.

Students are eligible for membership based on their outstanding academic record. Senior undergraduates must have a minimum GPA of 3.75 and juniors must have a minimum GPA of 3.9 to be members. In addition to an excellent GPA, these students must have breadth and depth across the liberal arts.
