Open forums seek campus, community views on next chancellor

Public forums seeking campus and community perspectives on the qualities and talents needed in the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s next chancellor will continue during the next two weeks.

"We hope that these forums will provide important guidance as the search for the next chancellor proceeds," says Marsha Mailick Seltzer, chair of the chancellor search and screen committee. "This is an opportunity and an invitation for stakeholders from inside and outside the university to lend their insight to the search."

Here is a list of the upcoming forums, which are open to the general public:

• Tuesday, Feb. 26, Main Lounge, Memorial Union, 800 Langdon St., 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.
• Thursday, March 6, Dag Hammarskjold Room, Union South, 227 N. Randall St., 4 to 5:45 p.m.

Committee members will be on hand at the forums to gather feedback from participants. These are part of a series of forums that kicked off on Feb. 20.

Staff members may attend without loss of pay after receiving approval from their supervisor.

In addition to the forums, individuals are welcome to submit via email nominations and their views of qualities needed in a new chancellor to chancellorsearch@bascom.wisc.edu. More information about the search, the committee and the university — designed for the general public and potential applicants — is available on a new Web site.

Chancellor John D. Wiley announced in December that he is stepping down as the university’s chief executive officer in September. A 23-member search and screen committee has been formed to identify and evaluate candidates for the job, and plans to submit a list of five finalists to the Special Regents Committee before the end of the semester.

Those finalists are expected to come to campus in early May to meet with faculty, staff, students, administrators and community leaders.

The full Board of Regents plans to appoint Wiley’s successor in early June.
