NOW president addresses future of feminism
Patricia Ireland, the controversial president of the National Organization for Women, will discuss “Feminism and Activism: Moving into the 21st Century” as part of UW–Madison’s Distinguished Lecture series.
Ireland has led NOW since 1991, and during that time she has emerged as a leading player in the global feminist movement. She has used her background in corporate law to put into feminist context such current issues as child care arrangements, nominations to the Supreme Court and the makeup of the Clinton cabinet. She initiated the 1992 Global Feminist Conference in Washington, D.C., to celebrate NOW’s 25th anniversary.
Ireland will speak April 14, at 7:30 p.m., in the Wisconsin Union Theater. The event is free and open to the public, although tickets will be required. UW–Madison students, faculty and staff can pick up one ticket per person at the Wisconsin Union box office beginning April 8. Remaining tickets will be distributed to the general public April 13. Box office hours are 11:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Monday-Friday, and noon-5 p.m., Saturday.
The Wisconsin Union’s Distinguished Lectures series is intended to promote learning beyond the classroom for members of the university and larger communities. For more information, contact Adam Loewy, (608) 262-2216.
