NCAA golf championships play in Madison

May 15, 1998

Top female collegiate golfers from 19 teams will gather May 20-23 for the 72-hole National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament on the par- 72, 6,033-yard University Ridge Golf Course.

The event will be the first national collegiate championship held at the site. ESPN2 will provide live coverage. The NCAA Women’s Golf Championships is the only nationwide broadcast of a women’s collegiate golf event this year and the first televised event ever at University Ridge.

Many of the collegiate golfers attending the NCAA Championship will be future Ladies Professional Golf Association touring professionals. The winner’s list, dating back to 1941, includes former and current LPGA standouts such as two-time U.S. Open winner Annika Sorenstam, who won for Arizona in 1991.

Although Arizona State has won five titles since 1990, no individual champion has ever repeated. Last year’s winner, Heather Bowie of Texas, has graduated, leaving the door open for a new champion.
