MPD seeks information on Park Street attempted armed robbery

September 7, 2011

Madison police are investigating the attempted armed robbery of a 21-year-old man at 35 S. Park St. early today (Sept. 7).

The area of the robbery is close to Newell Smith Residence Hall and the 21 N. Park St. office building.

At 1:59 a.m., the victim was walking in the area when he heard voices and footsteps behind him. The suspect then ran up to the victim and pushed him in the chest. The suspect demanded money and pulled out a folding knife and threatened the victim. The victim ran from the area. Nothing was taken, and the victim was not injured.

The suspect is described as a white male, age 18-23, 6 feet to 6 feet, 3 inches tall, medium build, wearing a black T-shirt and jeans.

A victim is never to blame for being the target of a criminal act, according to UWPD Sgt. Aaron Chapin. However, following common sense personal safety tips can help reduce your risk of becoming a victim.

“We’re working hard to make the campus area safe and secure for our community,” he says. “But safety is a partnership, and we need everyone’s help.”

Some basic tips include:

— Never walk alone, particularly at night.

— Carry a cell phone and dial 911 for help.

— Lock your doors, even when you are home.

— Campus and downtown are part of a growing city. Use your instincts and common sense as your first defense.

— Don’t let anyone you don’t know into your apartment or residence hall.

— If you plan to drink, do so in moderation to avoid putting yourself in a position of increased risk.

Investigators say that they want to speak with anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the robbery.
