GRANTS
Jeremy Foltz, Timo Goeschl, Bradford Barham, assistant professors and professor of agricultural and applied economics, and Frederick Buttel, professor of rural sociology, received a three-year, $400,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Research Initiative and a two-year, $150,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to study the rate and direction of research in agriculture and the life sciences at U.S. Land Grant universities. They will survey scientists and collect secondary data to analyze the changing incentive effects of new funding sources, such as patents and industry partnerships, on the types and quality of research undertaken at U.S. Land Grant universities.
HONORED
Michael R. Carter, professor of agricultural and applied economics, received the award for Outstanding Journal Article at the American Agricultural Economics Association meeting in Denver in August. The award was for his article “Getting Institutions ‘Right’ for Whom? Credit Constraints and the Impact of Property Rights on the Quantity and Composition of Investment,” published in the American Journal of Agricultural Economics in February.
