HONORED

David Lynn, assistant professor of chemical and biological engineering, and Nimmi Ramanujam, assistant professor of biomedical engineering, were named two of the world’s 100 Top Young Innovators by Technology Review, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s magazine of innovation. Technology Review honors 100 young researchers each year whose innovative work has a profound impact on the world.

Len Maurer, retired College of Agricultural and Life Sciences associate dean for external relations and director of the communications program, will receive the CALS Distinguished Service Award.

The School of Library and Information Studies Jail Library Student Group has received the South Central Library System’s Chester Pismo Snavely Memorial Award for a Nifty Activity.

ELECTED

Lawrence (Larry) Casper, College of Engineering assistant dean, has been elected to the Board of Directors for the Engineering Research Council of the American Society for Engineering Education.

Carren Martin, Office of Orientation and New Student Programs, has been elected Executive Secretary/Treasurer of the National Orientation Directors Association for the 2003-06 term.

OTHER MILESTONES

Art Glenberg, professor of psychology, received a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation for his research, “Perceptual and Action Systems in High-Level Cognition.

Maryellen MacDonald and Mark Seidenberg, both professors of psychology, are investigators on a five-year National Institute of Mental Health Interdisciplinary Behavioral Sciences Center Grant. MacDonald will study “Interactive Processes in Language: Sentence Processing,” and Seidenberg will study “Age-Dependent Processes in Learning.”

Brad Postle, assistant professor of psychology, received a four-year grant from the National Institute of Mental Health for his research, “Investigating Cognitive and Neural Basis of Working Memory.”

GRANTS

Dave Dickson, emeritus professor of dairy science, and Ted Halbach, dairy science senior outreach specialist, coached a team of UW–Madison dairy cattle judges to fourth place at the Accelerated Genetics 10th Annual Midwest Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, Sept. 14 at Viroqua, Wis.

CORRECTION

In the list of emerita/emeritus appointments published in the Sept. 24 Wisconsin Week, the job title and department were listed incorrectly for David J. Berge, director of the School of Education’s Division of Recreational Sports, who retired after 18 years of service.
