Appointed

Susan Barribeau has been named electronic resources coordinator for the UW–Madison Libraries, a position she has held on an interim basis for the past year. She will continue serving as Web site manager for the libraries.

Iris Bolton has been named associate director for animal services at the Wisconsin Primate Research Center. She has served as the WPRC’s interim attending veterinarian since July 2002.

Wayne Hayes has been named project manager for Portal to Asian Internet Resources. Since August 2000, Hayes has acted as LearningLanguages.Net French editor for the Computer Sciences Department’s Internet Scout Project. He also has worked as an instructor for the Department of French and Italian.

Rebecca Payne has assumed the position of Japanese studies and general reference librarian. Previously, she served as project manager of the Digital Asia Library.

Rhonda Sager joined Health Sciences Libraries as the new circulation supervisor. Sager will oversee the circulation unit at Middleton Health Sciences Library and coordinate activities with other HSL units and campus libraries.

Catherine Vitale has moved to the Chemistry Library from her previous position in User Services in Memorial Library. Her duties in the Chemistry Library include course reserves, circulation, collection maintenance and administrative functions.

Luanne von Schneidemesser has been elected to the executive committee of the Council of Administrative Officers of the American Council of Learned Societies and is now its chair. She also serves on the Board of Directors for ACLS. Senior editor for the Dictionary of American Regional English, she also volunteers as executive secretary of the Dictionary Society of North America, headquartered at UW–Madison. She also is the Dictionary Society’s representative to ACLS’s Council of Administrative Officers.

Honored

Leonard Black, Wisconsin TechSearch director, has received the 2002 Bollinger Academic Staff Distinguished Achievement Award from the College of Engineering. TechSearch is Wendt Library’s information outreach program.

David Loewenstein, professor of English, has received the James Holly Hanford Award for Distinguished Book from the Milton Society for “Representing Revolution in Milton and His Contemporaries: Religion, Politics, and Polemics in Radical Puritanism” (Cambridge University Press, 2001).

Lawrence Shriberg, professor emeritus, communicative disorders, co-director of the Waisman Center’s Phonology Clinic, was recently recognized with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s “Honors of the Association.” This is the association’s highest award, recognizing distinguished contribution to the field of speech, language and hearing. Shriberg is also an investigator in the Waisman Center’s Communication Processes Unit.

Stephen M. Quintana, chair and professor of counseling psychology, has been elected by his peers as a fellow of the American Psychological Association for 2003. APA fellows are selected for their exceptional and outstanding contributions to the research, teaching or practice of psychology.

Fourteen UW Medical School faculty and staff completed 30 years of Medical School service in the last fiscal year. Dean Philip M. Farrell will honor them at a Jan. 23 University Club luncheon. Achieving this milestone are: Richard R. Burgess, oncology; Paul M. DeLuca, medical physics and dean’s office; Robert W. Drachenberg, family medicine; John D. Folts, medicine; Thomas D. France, ophthalmology and visual sciences; Robert W. Huntington, pathology and laboratory medicine; Marjorie H. Klein, psychiatry; Lewis A. Leavitt, pediatrics; Eberhard A. Mack, surgery; Charles A. Mistretta, medical physics; William S. Rhode, physiology; Condon R. VanderArk, medicine; Karen E. Wipperfurth, pharmacology; and Kathleen A. Zweifel, medical genetics.

The Wisconsin men’s crew and head coach Chris Clark, were named the College Crew of the Year and College Coach of the Year by Independent Rowing News in December.

Keith Kelling, professor, soil science, has been named a fellow of the Soil Science Society of America. Kelling’s applied research and extension programs have focused on soil testing and plant analysis interpretative systems, nutrient crediting from legumes and manure, and improving nutrient management and nutrient use efficiency for forages and potato.

Susan Ellis Weismer, professor, communicative disorders, recently received fellow status from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Weismer is also the coordinator of the Waisman Center’s Communication Processes Unit. The status of fellow is retained for life and is one of the association’s most prestigious awards. It recognizes professional or scientific achievement and outstanding contributions to the professions.

David Houghton, professor emeritus of atmospheric and oceanic sciences, has received the 2003 Charles E. Anderson Award given by the American Meteorological Society. Houghton, who served as AMS president and its commissioner on education, is recognized for his extraordinary contributions to promoting educational outreach, service and diversity among the AMS, as well as broader communities. Well known for his expertise in the atmospheric-ocean climate system, Houghton began his career at UW–Madison in 1968.
