Appointed
Gary Eiler, a health care executive from suburban Chicago, became UW Hospital’s chief financial officer May 1. Sharon Trimborn, former assistant vice president of nursing, became vice president for human resources April 1.

Honored
Athletics placed seventh this year in the Sears Directors’ Cup standings, its highest finish ever. The cup honors the institution with the most successful all-around athletics program with up to 20 sports, 10 for women and 10 for men. (Stanford came in first.) William W. Busse, professor of medicine, in March was elected president of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology through 2001.

Susan C. Cook, professor of music and women’s studies, received the Gertrude Lippincott Award from the Society of Dance History Scholars for the best article on dance published in 1999. Cook’s award-winning essay, “Watching Our Step: Embodying Research, Telling Stories,” was published in “Audible Traces: Gender, Identity, and Music,” edited by Lydia Hamessley and Elaine Barkin (Carciofoli Press, 1999).

Mark Courtney, associate professor of social work, was named Social Worker of the Year by the Wisconsin chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.

Edwin M. Foster, professor emeritus of food microbiology and toxicology and of bacteriology and former director of the Food Research Institute, recently was inducted into the Wisconsin Meat Industry Hall of Fame; Foster was honored for his work on meat microbiology and food safety. C. Richard Hutchinson, professor of pharmacy, was recently selected to receive the Research Achievement Award from the American Society for Pharmacognosy and the Distinguished Alumni Award from Ohio State University, where he received his undergraduate degree.

Jerry Kaufman, professor of urban and regional planning, is the first planner in Wisconsin to be named to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners in recognition of his contributions to planning and society.

Carren Martin, student services coordinator in the Campus Information, Assistance and Orientation office, was recently elected to the National Orientation Directors Association Board of Directors.

Dennis Maki, Ovid O. Meyer Professor of Medicine, has been selected to receive the 2000 Erwin R. Schmidt Interstate Teaching Award from the State Medical Society of Wisconsin for his 25 years of teaching.

Susan Skochelak, senior associate dean for academic affairs for the Medical School, received the State Medical Society of Wisconsin’s Distinguished Service Award for 2000 in recognition of her role in developing the school’s primary care curriculum.

The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs received the Meritorious Contribution Award from the National Council of University Research Administrators, Midwest Region, for a project on grant administration. Staff members include former supervisor Lois Brako (replaced in February by Robert Perkl), Joyce Pease, Monya Schulenberg, Mark Sweet, Beth Walsh and Larry Westby.
