Martin Zanni, Meloche-Bascom Professor of Chemistry, was named winner of the 2011 Award for Initiatives in Research by the National Academy of Sciences. The award recognizes innovative young scientists and encourages research leading toward new capabilities for human benefit.

Three researchers with the Institute for Research on Poverty received honors from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to explore the role housing plays in the long-term health and well-being of children, families and communities. Timothy Smeeding, Lawrence Berger and J. Michael Collins will assess the effects of income support payments on family residential stability in the face of falling housing prices and long-term joblessness.

Clifton Conrad, a professor in the School of Education, has been awarded a three-year, $1.5 million grant from Lumina Foundation for Education, USA Funds and the Kresge Foundation to study “models of success” that help students finish their degrees at minority-serving institutions.

Karl Scholz, Department of Economics, was named the Nellie June Gray Professor of Economic Policy.

Deborah Blum, School of Journalism and Mass Communication, was named the Helen Firstbrook Franklin Chair for a second term, effective July 1, 2010.

Aric Rindfleisch, School of Business, was named the McManus-Bascom Professor in Marketing, effective Jan. 1.

Jeffrey Naughton, Department of Computer Sciences, was named the John P. Morgridge Chair No. 1 of Computer Science, effective Jan. 1.
