Appointed

Meyer Jackson, professor in the Department of Physiology, was appointed Kenneth S. Cole Professor of Physiology on July 1. The WARF professorship honors faculty who have made major contributions to the advancement of knowledge, through research endeavors and teaching and service activities.

Honored

Darrell Bazzell, associate vice chancellor for administration, was given a Friend of Veterinary Medicine Award from the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association at its annual convention. The award is given to a nonveterinarian in recognition of outstanding support for veterinary medicine or organized veterinary medicine.

Joseph Buongiorno, a professor of forest ecology and management with an appointment in the Gaylord Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala in recognition of his forest sector modeling.

Larry Edgerton, faculty associate for the Academic Advancement Program and English, was one of four teachers fromUW System campuses to be awarded the 2005 Alliant Energy Underkofler Excellence in Teaching Award.

Robert Fettiplace, professor in the Department of Physiology, received the Award of Merit from the Association for Research in Otolaryngology. The award is given to a scientist who has made significant contributions to understanding hearing and balance.

Andy Garcia-Rivera, director of the UW Department of Safety, received a Distinguished Service to Safety Award by the National Safety Council. Seven such awards were given at the council’s annual expo.

Ann Kinkade, director of the UW–Madison Family Business Center, was awarded a Certificate in Family Business Advising by the Family Firm Institute.

Ned Kalin, Hedberg Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology and chair of the Department of Psychiatry in the Medical School, received the 2005 Edward A. Strecker Award. Created to stimulate the therapeutic efforts of young psychiatrists, the Strecker Award annually honors an individual who has made significant contributions to the field of clinical psychiatry.

James P. Leary, professor of folklore and Scandinavian studies, director of the Folklore Program, and co-director of the Center for the Study of Upper Midwestern Cultures, was awarded the 2006 Benjamin A. Botkin Prize for outstanding lifetime achievement in public folklore. The award was given by the American Folklore Society at its annual meeting in Atlanta, in recognition of Leary’s 30 years of work in the field of public folklore.

Hired

Claire Wendland, assistant professor in anthropology and obstetrics and gynecology, and Laura Schechter, assistant professor in agricultural and applied economics, were the first faculty members hired under a new initiative developed by the Division of International Studies called “seed hires.” Under the program, International Studies, the colleges of Agricultural and Life Sciences and Letters and Science, and the School of Medicine and Public Health have partnered to create faculty lines in emerging fields to benefit multiple departments.

Rob Forget has been hired as associate director of recruitment in the Office of Admissions, a position formerly held by Cleveland James. After spending 15 years in the Admissions Office at Michigan Technological University, Forget will be responsible for all undergraduate recruitment activities at UW–Madison.
