Media advisory: UW-Madison furlough community service day

May 14, 2011 By Stacy Forster

More than 150 University of Wisconsin–Madison faculty and staff members will spend their final mandatory campus-wide furlough day on Monday, May 16 working on such volunteer activities as planting at the Allen Centennial Gardens and preparing prizes for the Madison Public Library summer reading program.

It’s the second year in a row that a group of academic and classified staff has organized the day of service. It grew out of a resolution passed by the Academic Staff Assembly that encouraged academic staff to consider volunteering during the 16 unpaid days that all state employees were required to take under the two-year state budget that ends on June 30.

For media interested in seeing a project in action, volunteers will be working at Lakeshore Nature Preserve from 9 a.m. to noon. For more information on the service day, contact Heather Daniels at 608-213-0238 or hdaniels@grad.wisc.edu.
