LUNAFEST™ films provide primer on empowerment

December 6, 2006

Kristen Berman, a senior majoring in marketing and economics, is quite the entrepreneur.

“I own netNerds, an in-home computer service company targeted to other students and their computing needs,” she says.

Berman has dedicated her business to helping her fellow students empower themselves technically. She also gives empowerment of a woman’s voice by bringing the LUNAFEST™ Film Festival to Madison.

LUNAFEST™, a national touring film showcase of short films by and about women, is a project of LUNABAR. This year will be the festival’s second time here. Countries represented include India, China, Britain, the United States and more. Several films tell stories about the experience of ethnic groups new to the nation in which they currently live. All show how women are able to grow in their own strength and inspire each other through such issues as domestic violence, infanticide, immigration, adoption, cancer and more.

The Campus Women’s Center, Women in Business and the Marketing Society sponsor the festival in Madison. The cost is $7–$10, and proceeds support the Breast Cancer Fund and the Harambee Health Center in Madison.

“In bringing these films to Madison, we are supporting charities that have a deep impact on womens’ lives,” Berman says. “It’s all about empowering women, something I am passionate about.”

The first film screens at 8 p.m. tonight (December 6) at Madison Avenue, 624 University Ave. For more information, contact Berman at 239-0241 or kkberman@wisc.edu. For information about the individual films, visit LUNAFEST 2006–2007.
