Lithuanian ambassador to speak

Vygaudas Uackas, ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to the United States, will be the featured speaker at a reception in honor of visiting Fulbright scholars and teachers Friday, Sept. 27.

Uackas will speak about “East-West Relations since 9/11: A Lithuanian/Baltic Perspective” at the Pyle Center, 702 Langdon St., beginning at 5 p.m.

Uackas will also speak at a luncheon earlier in the day, at noon, at the University Club, 803 State St., sponsored by the International Institute and the Center for Russia, East Europe and Central Asia. The luncheon is by reservation only. For information, contact Rita Krueger, (608) 262-3379.

The Fulbright Association and Institute will welcome some 50 visiting scholars and students from countries such as Vietnam, Brazil, Jordan, Indonesia, Germany, Senegal, Nigeria, Turkey, Latvia, Mexico, Korea and Ireland. Six visiting international scholars will be in residence at the UW–Madison during the 2002-03 academic year under the Fulbright Visiting Scholars program. The Fulbright program is sponsored by the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. State Department, and administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars. Visiting teachers from Bulgaria, England and Germany will be in the Wisconsin communities of Baraboo, Sun Prairie and Mequon.

The Fulbright reception is sponsored by the Wisconsin chapter of the Fulbright Association and International Institute. Gilles Bousquet, dean of International Studies and Director of the Institute, will make introductory remarks. The public is welcome to attend but an R.S.V.P. is requested.
