Leading scholar on Thai media to speak

Professor Ubonrat Siriyuvasak, chair of the Department of Mass Communication at Chulalongkorn University, Thailand will discuss democratization of the broadcast media in Thailand when she visits campus this month.

The free public lecture is scheduled Friday, April 27, at noon in 206 Ingraham Hall, 1155 Observatory Drive.

Ubonrat, a leading media scholar in Thailand, focuses her research on the roles of radio, television and print in the process of democratization in Thailand. In 1992, popular opposition to military rule led to new elections, a coalition government and constitutional reforms.

Ubonrat is a member of a national commission on broadcast media in Thailand. Ubonrat received her Ph.D. in mass communication research from the University of Leicester, England (1990). She is the author of numerous articles and publications. Her areas of research and publication cover media structure, the media industry, popular culture including Thai pop music, women and the media, and children and the media.
