Latin@Heritage offers new perspectives on American issues

September 23, 2003

The students involved with Latin@ Heritage are providing an out-of-classroom learning experience so members of all cultures can broaden their perspective on the American experience, according to Eric Mata, an adviser at the Multicultural Student Center.

“We will provide information/ideas/ philosophies that will challenge the way people view their own experiences,” he says. “We hope to provide something new for those who attend, and hope to raise their awareness of the Latino experience and the commonalities and differences that are a part of being Latino.”

To that end, upcoming programs include:

  • “Reclaiming Machismo: Creating a New Male Identity,” Thursday, Sept. 25, 6-8 p.m., On Wisconsin Room, Red Gym. What does it mean to be men in the Latin community? How do we begin to change the perception and realities that exist within the construct of machismo?
  • “Labor Issues in the Latino Community,” Thursday, Oct. 2, 6-8 p.m., MSC Lounge, second floor, Red Gym. This workshop will focus on the impact labor issues and the labor movement had on the Latino community.
  • An appearance by Teatro Izcalli Sinverguenza, a San Diego-based Chicano Comedy Troupe that educates others about the Chicano/Mexican Americans in this country. Saturday, Oct. 11, 7 p.m., Mosse Humanities Building. More information: http://www.sit.wisc.edu/~lcca.
