Korean Cultural Day to be held Sunday

April 10, 1998

In celebration of Asian American Month, the Soyo Am Buddhist Association, a UW–Madison student organization, is sponsoring its Second Annual Korean Cultural Day Sunday, April 12 from noon to 5 p.m. at the Eagle Heights Community Center.

The celebration highlights the presence of a lively Korean population in Wisconsin. While most Koreans are Christian, the Korean Buddhist population is a significant presence in the state along with a growing multi-racial population practicing Tibetan, Japanese and Chinese Buddhism.

The community’s ceremonies and celebrations throughout the year mark the importance of cultural and spiritual persistence both in the U.S. and in Korea as that country continues to face upheaval associated with the Asian economic crisis.

The celebration includes an array of events including authentic Korean cuisine and dance, a Taekwondo martial arts demonstration, a cultural exhibition and traditional games and songs.

The Eagle Heights Community Center is located at 611 Eagle Heights Drive off of Lake Mendota Drive near Picnic Point.
