Jazz event benefits campus child care, honors educators

May 17, 2006

Well-known local jazz singer Jan Wheaton, with the Jan Wheaton Quintet, will perform at a fund-raising event to benefit the University of Wisconsin–Madison Campus Child Care Centers.

The event will be held at 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 15, at Fyfe’s Corner Bistro, 1344 E. Washington Ave., Madison. The event will include a silent auction and a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses, and T-shirts will be on sale. Hors d’oeuvres will be provided, and a cash bar will be available. Tickets are $25 and are available at the door or by calling (608) 890-0436.

The campus child care system is comprised of eight centers that serve approximately 500 children each week. The centers, which all are accredited nationally and by the city of Madison, provide early care and education for the children of UW–Madison faculty, staff and students.

This year’s event will honor seven campus early childhood educators for their outstanding service to the university. Each teacher has provided exceptional, high-quality early childhood education services and is estimated to have served 500-1,000 families. The teachers are Jackie Leckwee, Sue Sprecher and Kris Krystofiak from the Preschool Lab; Joan Ershler, Lynn Roethe and Becky Lewis from the Waisman Center; and Becky Evans from University Houses Preschool.

The teachers were selected for their commitment to the university child care system (each has more than 20 years of experience on the campus) and to the development of the campus child care system through new programming and program expansions.
