International groups honored

October 21, 2003 By John Lucas

The Madison Civics Club will honor the Office of International Student Services and the Madison Friends of International Students for efforts to support international students in the face of challenges posed by the post-Sept. 11 environment.

Judy Brodd, director of ISS, and Loree Davies, president of MFIS, will accept their “community honoree” awards at a Civics Club luncheon at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at Monona Terrace.

“ISS and MFIS are so important to the life of the international-student community on campus,” says Nancy Schultz of the Civics Club. “They both offer support at a time when international students may not always feel welcome to our country.”

A unit of the Offices of the Dean of Students, ISS handles services and programs that make life easier for more than 3,600 international students. ISS services include orientation programs, immigration document production and advising services, and programming.

ISS is responsible for ensuring UW–Madison complies with the federal Student Exchange Visitor Information System and managing delays caused by increased scrutiny of student visas.

MFIS, a community group, offers temporary hosting of students, conversational English classes, a coat and furniture loan program, and other activities.
