Human resources development offers new training

March 27, 2003

UW–Madison’s Office of Human Resource Development (OHRD), in partnership with Wisconsin Technical College System (eTech) and state agencies, is offering 90 online courses in eight curricula including management, communications, leadership, customer service, personal development, team building, knowledge management and project management.

SkillSoft, a major e-learning vendor, produces the courses. All courses cost less than $100 each and each curriculum can also be purchased.

Don Schutt, director of OHRD, notes that the courses are both readily available at employees’ desktops and of high quality. “Human resources training is the fastest growing area of e-learning”, Schutt adds. Finally, e-learning can help fiscally. Recently DOA Secretary Mark Marotta wrote: “Agencies should seek lower cost alternatives … to address training and travel needs.” Schutt says that departments and offices should consider e-learning as an alternative to traditional off-campus classroom training as more cost and time effective, and readily available when needed.

  • The document on the SkillSoft page called, “Important Information About SkillSoft and E-Learning” has additional information and ways you can see how the courses work at no charge.
  • OHRD also has scheduled informational sessions on the SkillSoft courses on April 1 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. and April 3 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in 220 Ingraham Hall. No registration is required. Interested persons may also call (608) 265-8982 to arrange a demonstration.
