Hong: Vote in ASM elections

October 13, 2003 By John Lucas

Dean of Students Luoluo Hong is encouraging students to get involved in shared governance by voting in this week’s Associated Students of Madison (ASM) fall elections.

“Many students call or e-mail me to complain about decisions that are made on campus, or to provide good suggestions for what we can do to improve student life,” Hong says. “ASM can provide students the opportunity to have a voice on campus, as well as play a direct role in bringing about changes.”

Elections will be held Tuesday through Thursday and students can vote at http://www.asm.wisc.edu. There will Internet polling access available at the Memorial Union.

Students will be voting in the following areas:

  • Two freshmen representatives to Student Council
  • One non-Letters and Sciences graduate student representative to Student Council
  • One special student representative to Student Council
  • One elected at-large representative to Student Services Finance Committee
  • Two referenda forwarded by Student Council

Any freshman, non-L & S graduate student, and special student will be able to vote for their representative on Student Council. All students will be able to vote for the SSFC representative and referenda. Along with the ability to vote for one of the running candidates, there will also be the option to write-in alternative names.

Students, faculty and academic staff share in the responsibility of governing UW–Madison through the shared governance system. ASM is UW–Madison’s student government. Student Council, its main governing body, meets twice a month to discuss campus issues and plan for future action.

“Being involved in ASM is an incredibly rewarding experience because each student representative really dedicates themselves to bettering our student community and relations,” says Austin Evans, ASM chair. “It’s amazing to see what we’re capable of accomplishing.”

Two important improvements have been made to this year’s election process. Paper ballots have been eliminated and students can now vote on-line using their NetID, rather than their PIN, as they have had to in the past.
