Health event connects students with resources

September 3, 2002

This fall, hundreds of students who have chronic medical conditions will, just like their peers, buy books and try to find their classes.

In addition to those common back-to-school worries, students will also be managing their epilepsy, diabetes, asthma, hepatitis, depression, or other chronic medical condition-many for the first time on their own.

To help, University Health Services will hold the Our Common Ground Resource Fair, 3-5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, first floor lounge, Chadbourne Residential College, 420 N. Park St.

At the fair, campus and community representatives will present information about peer support, student services, local advocacy and volunteer opportunities, and self-care information.

“Students who have chronic medical conditions can feel marginalized in this large university setting,” says Stephanie King, UHS community service coordinator, and Our Common Ground project coordinator. “It is important that they know what kind of support is available to them on campus and in the community, so that they can have a positive and healthy UW experience.”

Concerned parents and students close to someone with a chronic medical condition are also encouraged to attend.
