Bill Sagal, the first human Bucky Badger mascot, is assisted by Bill Sachse and Connie Conrad, who constructed the bulky badger. Bucky’s official birthday is Oct. 2, 1940, but it was not until nine years later that the symbol of UW spirit took on the physical form and name he’s known by today. UW-Madison Archives
