Guarneri String Quartet to perform in memory of fine arts pioneer

The famed Guarneri String Quartet, on its final tour, will perform at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23, in the Wisconsin Union Theater.

The concert is presented in memory of Fan Taylor, former director of the Wisconsin Union Theater, who died in April at the age of 94. The Guarneri String Quartet has toured the world numerous times since its 1964 debut. This will be its fourth and last appearance at the Wisconsin Union Theater; its members are retiring after this tour. The concert will include “String Quartet in G Minor, Op. 74, No. 3,” “The Rider” by Franz Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “String Quartet No. 15 in D Minor, K.421” and “String Quartet No. 15 in A minor, Op. 132” by Ludwig van Beethoven.

The quartet has been featured on many television and radio specials, documentaries and educational presentations and starred in the full-length film “High Fidelity — The Guarneri String Quartet.”

Besides serving as the Wisconsin Union Theater’s director, Taylor also founded the international Association of Performing Arts Presenters and was instrumental in establishing the arts administration program, the first in the nation.

Tickets are $18, $32 and $38 for the general public, $30 and $36 for WAA members, Union members, UW–Madison faculty and staff and non-UW–Madison students.UW–Madison students are $10. The concert is sponsored by the Wisconsin Union Directorate Theater Committee. Support is also given by the Wisconsin Arts Board and the Wisconsin Union Theater Endowment Fund. Wisconsin Public Radio is the media sponsor.
