Group outlines construction priorities

The Campus Planning Committee has endorsed five building projects for 2003-05, including a $22.9 million Health Services Building and a $30 million renovation of Sterling Hall as the top two priorities.

The Health Services Building would house University Health Services, which provides health care for UW–Madison students, and provide space for registered student organizations. The university is still finalizing a location for the building. The renovated Sterling Hall would be the new home for the Psychology Department after the Physics Department moves to Chamberlin Hall.

The other three, in priority order, include a $10 million utility systems upgrade, the $7 million second phase of the Integrated Dairy Facility and the $12.6 million Biological Systems Engineering Addition.

Of the $82.5 million overall projected cost of the five projects, $58 million comes from state-supported borrowing.

Two other projects were approved to enter the planning phase during the 2003-05 biennium. They include a new Nursing Science Center and a major Bascom Hall restoration.

The projects require approval from Chancellor John Wiley, the Board of Regents and the state before they can move forward.
