Graduate Student Died From Dengue Fever

November 6, 1997

Clairmont Broomes, a 29-year-old graduate student who died suddenly on Sept. 22, was apparently stricken with dengue fever, a life threatening viral illness transmitted by the bite of infective mosquitos and found primarily in tropic and sub-tropic areas. Broomes, who was from Barbados, had displayed the common symptoms for dengue fever: nausea, fever, and severe dehydration. Dengue fever is not an airborne illness, and person-to-person contact does not occur.

Broomes’ positive test for dengue fever was made by the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta.
