Getting inside contemporary studio case furniture

April 5, 2002

Organized by the Elvehjem Museum of Art, “Contemporary Studio Case Furniture: The Inside Story” opens Saturday, April 6, with 37 pieces of case furniture by contemporary artists.

The exhibition through June 16 explores ways in which contemporary artists approach case furniture, a traditional form that is constantly being defined and redefined.

Even though the creation of studio furniture has a long tradition in Wisconsin, the Elvehjem’s exhibition represents the first opportunity for Midwestern audiences to view these works in a broader context and in a museum setting.

Guest curators are Virginia Boyd, Department of Environment, Textile and Design; and Thomas Loeser, Department of Art.

The 37 artists featured in the exhibition include emerging furniture makers and artists whose careers are well-established.

Furniture in the exhibition includes boxes, cabinets, chests, cupboards, desks and sideboards.

A 96-page catalogue gives historical context.

A free public reception to celebrate the exhibition will be held at the Elvehjem Friday, April 5, 6-8 p.m.

Before the reception, artist Wendell Castle will offer a slide-lecture, “An Idea in Transition,” 5-6 p.m., L160 Elvehjem.
