For the Record

Policies and Procedures

Notice to University Staff
In accordance with the university’s stormwater permit and Pesticide Use Policy, pesticide applicators are to notify Central Answering and Response Service (CARS) at 263-3333 prior to using a pesticide. In addition, applicators are to notify faculty, staff, students and visitors of their pesticide use by a reasonable and effective means, such as posting signs where pesticides have been applied; distributing posters, flyers and electronic mail to people who may frequent the application area; or publishing a notice on the Safety Department’s web site at http://www.wisc.edu/safety. The policy is also posted there.

The Pesticide Use Policy encourages best management practices (BMPs) that maximize effectiveness and safety, and minimize environmental impact. Pesticides used in research and teaching are expected to abide by this policy’s objectives, although alternative procedures may be allowed for the purposes of academic study.

This year the Safety Department will be posting BMPs for reducing pollutants in stormwater, including BMPs for Salt Usage, Fertilizer Usage, Spill Prevention and Erosion Control at Construction Sites.

Check www.wisc.edu/safety or call Sally Rowe of the Safety Department at 262-0979 for pesticide label information, information about hazards and exposures to using pesticides, or information regarding pollutants in stormwater.

University Lectures Committee
The University Lectures Committee solicits applications from departments, academic programs and registered student organizations for support of public lectures to be held during the 1999-2000 academic year. As stated in Faculty Policies and Procedures, the function of the committee is to consider “requests for lectures of general interest that are not primarily supplementary to or extensions of programs of instruction provided by colleges, schools or departments.”

Potential applicants should read the document “Instructions for Requesting University Lectures Committee Support.” To be considered by the committee, applications must conform to specifications in this document and must be submitted on current (1999-2000) forms.

New applications will be reviewed by the committee once each month. Additional preparation time is required when inviting international speakers in order to allow sufficient time for the visa application process.

Applications will be accepted as long as funds are available; however, applicants are urged to submit requests well in advance, if possible. To obtain a copy of the instructions, an application form or other information, contact Joe Farrenkopf at farrenkopf@mail.bascom.wisc.edu; or 262-3956.

TAA Collective Bargaining Agreement
The collective bargaining agreement between the Teaching Assistants’ Association (TAA) and the State of Wisconsin was signed into law by the governor on April 7. The terms and conditions of that agreement are now in effect. While hard copies of the agreement will not be available until later this spring, the contract will be posted on the University’s Office of Human Resources web site, http://wiscinfo.doit.wisc.edu/ohr/ and on the TAA’s web site, http://www.taa-madison.org/.

The new contract provides for lump sum payments for TAs and PAs who had appointments in October 1999. TAs and PAs who were on an academic year (C Basis) or calendar year (A Basis) appointment will receive a lump sum payment of $325, prorated by the appointment level. PAs (including graders) who were paid on an hourly (H Basis) rate will receive a lump sum of $100 (not prorated). These lump sum amounts will be paid at the same time that the April paychecks are available (approximately May 1).

In addition, there is a retroactive payment for TAs (back to the start of the current spring semester) and PAs (back to Jan.1, 2000). These payments will also be paid in conjunction with the April paychecks, payable on approximately May 1. The retroactive payments apply to all TAs who have had appointments anytime during the spring semester and all PAs (including graders) who have had appointments anytime since Jan. 1.

The regular April paychecks will reflect the new rates for TAs, PAs and graders. A second check will also be paid which combines the retro payments and the lump sum payment (if applicable).

The UW Teaching Academy plans a Summer Institute on Teaching and Learning, a four-day experience in faculty development and curriculum innovation. The institute will be June 5-8 at St. Benedict’s Center on the north side of Lake Mendota. The institute will offer faculty and instructional staff the opportunity to design a new course, individually or collaboratively taught; rethink and redesign an existing course; and reflect on teaching goals and methods in conversation with others. About 25 faculty/instructional staff members will be selected to participate in the institute, which will offer an opportunity for professional reflection and renewal in a collegial atmosphere. Applications from disciplinary or interdisciplinary teaching teams are welcome. A team of five UW–Madison faculty/instructional staff who can provide skills and resources on teaching and learning will serve as facilitators. The call for proposals for the institute is available on the web site http://www.wisc.edu/teachingacademy. E-mail Rosemary Griffith at rgriffit@students.wisc.edu to request a printed copy.
