Policies and Procedures

Herbicide Procedures in Campus Natural Areas and Arboretum
Spring and summer visitors to the Campus Natural Areas and Arboretum will see signs announcing glyphosate herbicide applications for control of garlic mustard. Already smothering out the groundlayer in many natural areas, this pest plant will be controlled by application of glyphosate in the most severely infested areas. The herbicide is applied with a colored marker dye to show where it has been sprayed.

Where infestation is only scattered and desirable woodland plants can be saved by cultural methods of control, volunteers are hand pulling. Various volunteer work parties for the pulling of garlic mustard are available if you wish to help.

Garlic mustard, Alliaria petiolata, is a biennial exotic which has in the last few years become a major threat to Wisconsin woodlands. It invades along edges of woodlands and spreads along trails and streams, growing in dense stands which choke out all other plants. Garlic mustard is further dispersed by flowing water, animals and human activities. In a matter of several years, this plant can choke out all other groundlayer species.

Herbicide application will be necessary on serious infestations for a number of years. The continual hand-weeding effort to prevent spread will be a seasonal procedure in the Campus Natural Areas and Arboretum management programs. Some of these efforts are part of university teaching and research.

Woody pest plants such as buckthorn and honeysuckle will be controlled with spot, targeted applications of the herbicide triclopyr (Garlon 3A or 4) at various times throughout the year.

The woody plant bud inhibitor fosamine will be used on woody and herbaceous plants in spot applications in June and September.

Application dates: Throughout the year depending on the target pest plant, chemical to be applied and weather conditions. Information: Arboretum, 262-5099; Campus Natural Areas, 265-9275; http://wiscinfo.doit.wisc.edu/safety

To volunteer with weeding: Arboretum, 263-7760. Campus Natural Areas, 265-9275.

Prescribed Burns In Campus Natural Areas and Arboretum
1918 Marsh: A prescribed control management fire is planned between March 22 and March 31. The exact date will be determined by weather conditions. The prescribed burn will be conducted by the Environmental Services department as part of the establish- ment of an Urban Ecology Field Station for purposes of teaching and research. Information: 265-9275.

Arboretum: A series of prescribed, controlled management burns will be conducted in various parts of the Arboretum this spring. Dates and locations will be determined on a daily basis by weather and smoke management concerns. Call the Arboretum reception desk, 263-7888, for daily burn plans in the Arboretum.

Annual Spring Pesticide Notice
In accordance with the university pesticide policy, applicators are to notify faculty, staff, students and visitors of campus pesticide use by either: posting signs where pesticides have been applied; distributing posters, flyers and electronic mail to people who may frequent the application area; or publishing a notice on the Safety Department’s web site: http://wiscinfo.doit.wisc.edu/safety.

The policy is also posted there. The pesticide policy encourages best management practices that maximize effectiveness and safety, and minimize environmental impact. In the future, the Safety Department will be posting best management practices in the following areas for reducing non-point source pollution: salt usage, spill prevention, erosion control at construction sites and fertilizer usage.

Check: http://wiscinfo.doit.wisc.edu/safety, or call 262-0979 for pesticide label information, information about hazards and exposures to using pesticides or information regarding practices listed above.

Chancellor’s Grants for Collaboration In Teaching
Six grants to encourage collaborative teaching projects will be awarded annually to tenured faculty. The awards will fund released time from one undergraduate course for one semester for each faculty member so that several faculty may develop a cross-disciplinary course intended primarily for undergraduates. Once developed, this course will be cross-listed among the participating departments and taught by the faculty team. Participants will be encouraged to become involved in teaching and learning initiatives across campus and will have Creating a Collaborative Academic Environment (CCAE) and other staff available for consultation.

Six awards will be made per year for three years, with the departments of the winning faculty members receiving up to $15,000 to defray costs of their colleagues’ time away from regular course offerings. Two teams of three faculty (each team must have two full professors), or three teams of two faculty (each team must have one full professor) will be awarded grants. Applicants may come from within the same college/school, or cross college/school boundaries. Faculty holding joint appointments should collaborate with colleagues outside their appointing units.

Funds for this chancellor’s initiative come from private sources. Deadlines: Monday, March 27, proposals due in deans’ offices. Monday, April 3, proposals due in Associate Vice Chancellor Bob Skloot’s office, 117 Bascom Hall. Monday, May 8, winners announced. For information about this award, visit: http://www.wisc.edu/ccae/pga/collaboration.html, or contact Katherine Sanders at Creating a Collaborative Academic Environment (CCAE), 271 Bascom Hall, 263-4257; kjsander@facstaff.wisc.edu.

Teaching Enhancement Grants
The Provost’s Office is pleased to announce the second year of the teaching and learning initiative for undergraduate education called the Teaching Enhancement Grants (TEGs). The chancellor has allocated $50,000 a year for three years from the resources available for innovative programs at the UW Foundation. Last year, the university fully funded 10 proposals and partially funded two proposals.

TEGs are intended to assist in implementing innovations in undergraduate education that would otherwise not be funded. They focus on undergraduate students’ active participation in their education (in-and-out-of-classroom experiences, service learning, etc.), through a variety of means (freshman seminars, field trips, meetings with visiting guests, etc.), with additional benefits (Comm-B credits, interdisciplinary endeavors, etc.).

Applications should be sent to the Office of Associate Vice Chancellor Bob Skloot, 117 Bascom Hall, by Monday, March 27. Questions, applications: Chris Carlson-Dakes, 263-4259; or e-mail: cgcarlso@facstaff.wisc.edu. A list of winners from last year is also available upon request.
