The signature event of the fitness fair, the Family Fun Run/Walk, offers runners and walkers the chance to compete in either a 5K or two-mile course, both of which begin Sunday morning near the intersection of University Bay Drive and Lake Mendota Drive.

Entry fees are $3 per person or $5 per family through Friday, Aug. 13; after Aug. 13, the entry fees are $5 per person and $10 per family.

To register in advance, call (608) 265-7026. The first 300 people to register will receive a T-shirt. Participants also can register the day of the event from 7-8:15 a.m. at the University Bay Drive fields near the UW Hospital and Clinics.

Runners and walkers can warm up with aerobics at 8 a.m., with the fun run/walk beginning at 8:30 a.m. Free bottled water, juice, bagels and fruit will be provided, along with door prizes. A free cup of Babcock Hall vanilla or chocolate ice cream will be provided while supplies last to all Recreational Fitness Fair participants.

Major sponsors are the UW–Madison Division of Intercollegiate Athletics and UW Health. Other sponsors include the Department of Kinesiology and the Division of Recreational Sports.

The Recreational Fitness Fair continues with a youth soccer clinic from 9-11 a.m. at the University Bay Drive fields. Led by the UW–Madison men’s and women’s soccer teams and coaches, the clinic will give soccer players ages 6-19 the chance to learn ball-handling techniques and improve their skills. Players must bring their own soccer ball and water bottle.

Those wanting to learn more about judo, lacrosse, Ultimate Frisbee and other non-traditional sports can check out the club sports demonstration, which begins at 9:30 a.m. at the University Bay Drive fields. Sport clubs involving UW–Madison students, staff and faculty will put on 30-minute demonstrations until noon.

Children and adults not accustomed to high-impact exercise can take part in a fitness workout designed for them starting at 10 a.m. The demonstration, also at the University Bay Drive fields, emphasizes total body fitness with an athletic feel.

Following the Recreational Fitness Fair, people can tour the university’s newest athletic facility from noon-5 p.m. The Kohl Center, at 601 W. Dayton St., is home to the Badger men’s and women’s basketball teams, UW hockey and WIAA state tournaments. Visitor also can see the Mendota Wall, a glass artwork created by Dale Chihuly, a UW–Madison alumnus and world-renowned glass artist.

From noon-6 p.m., water enthusiasts can canoe for free on Lake Mendota, and the Hoofers organization will host a variety of other activities at the Memorial Union Terrace lakefront, 800 Langdon St. This event will introduce people to the activities available to Wisconsin Union members.

Parking in university lots will be free Sunday, Aug. 22, and buses will shuttle visitors between events along special routes connecting major activities
