Exhibition resolves tension between sustainability, fashion

September 5, 2006

Sustainability and disposable design will come together in a new show at the Gallery of Design in the School of Human Ecology (SoHE), beginning today (Sept. 6).

Designer Li Han, who received her M.S. in environment, textiles and design this year, uses removable upholstery to satisfy tastes for changeable fashion and a durable framework to aid green design.

The gallery also hosts a discussion at 5 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 18, on the tension between fashion and sustainability, and ways to resolve it (or not).

Tackling this subject will be furniture designer and professor of art Tom Loeser, Madison-based green consultant Sonya Newenhouse, feng shui expert and professor of environment, textiles and design Wei Dong and Gallery of Design curator Jody Clowes. The event is free and open to the public.

The exhibition, likewise free and open to all, runs through Sunday, Sept. 17. For details, call the gallery at 262-8815 or e-mail the design gallery.
