Staff of the Employee Compensation and Benefits Services office prepares this column.

Paycheck distribution

What are my options?
The university encourages all employees to have direct deposit of payroll checks to the financial institution of choice because it means no lost or stolen paper checks, no waiting in line to pick up a payroll check and no special trip to the bank or credit union.

Those without direct deposit must pick up checks at 49 Peterson Building, 750 University Ave. Checks can be picked up Monday through Friday during normal business hours, 7:45-11:45 a.m. and 12:30-4:30 p.m. A valid photo ID is required to pick up your check. Checks not picked up become void after one year.

When is payday?
Employee Compensation and Benefits Services has posted schedules on the Web that give the pay dates for classified, unclassified and student hourly employees. Visit: http://www.bussvc.wisc.edu/ecbs/emp-calendars-schedules-menu.html.

When is the earliest a check is available?
Checks are not released prior to the pay date as printed on the check. Direct deposits are available the morning of the pay date.

Am I restricted to certain financial institutions?
The university can deposit a check to any financial institution throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.

How do I make changes to my direct deposit?
Complete a Direct Deposit Authorization Form and submit it to your benefits coordinator or Employee Compensation and Benefits Services, 750 University Ave., Room 49.

If you close your account and fail to notify us, receipt of your paycheck is delayed by three to four days. The money transmitted to the financial institution must be returned to Employee Compensation and Benefits Services before we can issue a check.

For the direct deposit form, visit: http://www.bussvc.wisc.edu/ecbs/pay-direct-deposit-auth-uw1032.doc

What happens if my paycheck is lost or stolen?
Contact us immediately so that we can issue a stop payment request to the state treasurer and request that the check be reissued. This process generally takes seven to 10 days.

Can someone else pick up my paycheck?
Yes, if the person picking up the check has a written authorization from you. The person picking up the check must present both their photo ID as well as yours. Note: An authorization to pick up your check is only valid for one pay date.

I’m leaving employment and moving before my last pay date.

Start Direct Deposit or change your current direct deposit arrangement to a bank that you can access after your move. Otherwise, we can mail your final check to you if you provide us with a self-addressed stamped envelope. Please write your Social Security number and the date of your last check on the inside flap of the envelope and deliver the envelope to Employee Compensation and Benefits Services, 750 University Ave., Room 49.
