DoIT offers opportunity to recycle computer parts easily, safely

September 23, 2009

Getting rid of old computer parts can often seem like a hassle. The hazardous materials found in old components can spread if the components are discarded in a landfill.

Now, the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) has partnered with Apple Inc. to offer a free, convenient way for members of the UW–Madison community to safely jettison outdated components.

Faculty, staff and students can bring old computer parts and peripherals — any brand, any age — to the DoIT Help Desk’s Walk-In Service Desk for recycling through Friday, Sept. 25. The service desk, located in the Computer Science building, is open on weekdays from 7:45 a.m.–5 p.m. Participants must present a valid UW ID.

In addition to being environmentally friendly, this program also offers security for personal information by removing hard drives and reducing them to confetti-sized pieces. Delete and back up any files and sensitive information and remove all transportable media before dropoff.

DoIT will only accept personally owned computer components; UW-owned equipment may be disposed of through SWAP. In addition, the program will not accept hazardous waste or batteries that are not an integral part of the system being recycled, UPS systems, CRTs that have been removed from their cases, or CRTs that are cracked or broken.

All e-waste collected in conjunction with Apple is processed in North America; nothing is shipped overseas for disposal. Recycling vendors are audited for annual compliance with health and safety laws.
