DoIT announces student trainee program

The Student Computer Network Trainee Program has been created by the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) as a way to meet the shortage of qualified employees in the computing field, give students marketable skills and help fill the need for computing staff on campus.

The Student Computer Network Trainee Program hopes to attract 20 undergraduate students with at least three years remaining before graduation to complete computer support training. The full-time paid training combines classroom instruction with hands-on application and will be held June 1-Aug. 14.

Upon successful completion of the training, students will obtain certification in both MAC and Windows environments and be guaranteed job placement in campus openings averaging 15-20 hours per week next fall

Interested candidates are not required to have technical expertise but should have strong customer service skills. Students from all academic disciplines are encouraged to participate. Benefits include paid training, job placement on campus until they obtain their degree, and increased career opportunities following graduation.

Marcia Jezwinski of DoIT Human Resources says the program is a proactive approach to an increasing shortage: “There are always several computing position vacancies on the UW campus, not to mention those in the private sector, and success of programs such as this can impact positively both for students and the university.” Interested students should contact Marie Yanke at 263-1790 or e-mail marie.yanke@doit.wisc.edu.
