Dodgeball tournament raises funds to fight pneumonia

March 2, 2010 By Kiera Wiatrak

The Best Shot Foundation knew the University of Wisconsin–Madison community wouldn’t want to wait on the sidelines in their fight against pneumonia.

That’s why it chose Madison as one of 12 cities to host a dodgeball tournament to raise money to fight the world’s deadliest children’s disease.

The Madison Pnock Out Pneumonia Dodgeball Tournament will take place at the Southeast Recreational Facility on Saturday, March 20 at 11 a.m. and is expected to conclude around 4 p.m.

The tournament will consist of 32 teams comprised of 15 people each.  Anyone 18 or older is eligible to play.

“A staggering 5,500 children die of pneumonia every day,” says Madison tournament coordinator and UW–Madison student Nicole Lenz. “No one should have to experience the premature death of their child due to a preventable and curable disease like pneumonia.”

For a registration fee of $20, participants can register to play here. Players have the option of joining an existing team or starting their own. The last day to register is Saturday, March 13. If participants register before the day of the event, they get a $10 discount on their registration fee. Individuals can register the day of the event for $15.

Money raised at Pnock Out Pneumonia will be used to fight the disease around the world.

Organizers have arranged similar events at 12 campuses across the nation. Others include the University of Michigan, the University of Minnesota, Virginia Tech and the University of Pennsylvania.
