Deli to open in Pharmacy

August 20, 2001

“Back-to-school” conjures lunch boxes, insulated bags, or brown paper sacks … and a daily scramble to assemble foods to pack inside. But for anyone who dreads rummaging through kitchen cupboards at the last minute, relief is on the way.

The new Rennebohm Pharmacy Building near the University Hospital will open a quick-serve deli in time for the academic year.

The “ApotheCafé” on the Pharmacy Building’s second floor will open for breakfast and lunch on weekdays when classes are in session, with bakery and beverages available 7:15-9 a.m. and lunch, 10:45 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

ApotheCafé Menu highlights include:

— “Weeds and Seeds” (fresh green and Caesar salads)

— Prescription (made-to-order) sandwiches

— Over-the-counter sandwiches

— Two homemade soups of the day

— Cookies baked on site

— Side Effects (snack foods including the “Deli Dilly” pickle)

— The “Daily Dose” lunch special

— Elixirs (including gourmet coffee)

To save time, anyone with a current UW–Madison ID card may purchase food at the deli by using the university’s WisCard debit card program, which accesses debit account balances through the UW ID card. Customers also may pay with cash.

The deli is managed by the Division of University Housing, which also operates four dining rooms, three coffee houses, and two made-to-order/carryout facilities on campus. University Housing’s registered dietitians are planning the menus and creating special recipes
