Dean reviews under way

January 17, 2007

Several years ago, the university implemented a standard five-year review procedure for deans. The purpose is to assess their academic and administrative leadership and their performance in such areas as external relations and resource management.

The chancellor and provost appoint the members of the review committees.

School of Nursing Dean Katharyn May’s review is in the final stage, and a report is expected to be submitted to Chancellor John Wiley and Provost Patrick Farrell by the end of this month.

A review is currently under way for School of Human Ecology Dean Robin Douthitt. Review committee members include Mel Weinswig, chair; Wei Dong; Nadine Marks; Linda Baumann; and Joan Raducha.

Reviews for College of Engineering Dean Paul Peercy and School of Business Dean Michael Knetter will begin in the next few months.

Peercy’s review committee includes Phil Certain, chair; John Booske; Patti Brennan; Herb Wang; and Ginger Freitag.

Knetter’s review committee will be chaired by former chancellor and chemistry professor emeritus Irving Shain. Other members are Joan Schmit; Barry Gerhart; Monika Wingate; and Michael Corradini.

As part of the review process, review committees invite comments from the university community regarding the deans’ leadership and administration. Written comments may be addressed to committee chairs or other committee members.

The review process also includes interviews with the deans’ constituencies. Students, staff and faculty are welcome to submit requests to be interviewed. They should be addressed to the staff of the review committee or to committee members.

Comments or interview requests regarding the Douthitt review should be submitted by Thursday, Feb. 1. Deadlines have not yet been set regarding submission of comments or interview requests in the Peercy and Knetter reviews.

The review committees treat all communications as confidential, and the university will protect such confidentiality within the framework of Wisconsin law.
