Dance program for spring attracts guest artists

The Dance Program has a full and innovative schedule planned for the spring semester. In addition to showcasing works by students, faculty and guest artists in the coming months, the program will host a regional festival for hundreds of college dance students March 13-16. Spring highlights follow.

  • Yacov Sharir, virtual choreographer from the University of Texas at Austin, guest artist in residence, Jan. 25-Feb. 1. Sharir will conduct a workshop for students and give a public talk Tuesday, Jan. 28, 7 p.m., Lathrop Hall.
  • The First Asian Contemporary Performance Arts Festival, directed by Peggy Choy, opens with the Changmu Dance Company of Seoul, Korea on Saturday, Feb. 8, 8 p.m., Lathrop Hall.   • Palindrome Intermedia Performance Group will conduct workshops, teach classes and perform with Jin-Wen Yu Dance during its residency Feb. 9-22. The German group focuses on the application of computers and other new technologies to human movement art. Information: http://www.palindrome.de
  • Jin-Wen Yu Dance presents River, a full-evening concert, Feb. 20-22, 8 p.m., Lathrop Hall. Works by Palindrome artists and collaborative works by nationally known dance musician Christian Cherry and Jin-Wen Yu will be showcased. Tickets, information: 262-1640 or http://www.jin-wenyudance.org
  • At the annual High School Dance Workshop, Saturday, Feb. 22, high school students can take master classes taught by faculty, staff and guests throughout the day; incoming freshmen may audition for a scholarship. Free, but registration required. Information: 262-3679.
  • Ellen Bromberg, choreographer from the University of Utah, guest artist in residence, Feb. 23-March 2, leads a weeklong Hybrid Performance Project and gives a public talk Tuesday, Feb. 25, 7 p.m., Lathrop Hall.
  • Li Chiao-Ping Dance presents Of Momentous Order, a concert featuring new solos, duets and group dances celebrating Bach’s music, March 6-8, 8 p.m., the Madison Civic Center’s Spotlight Room. Tickets, information: 263-5735, mgr@lichiaopingdance.org or http://www.lichiaopingdance.org.
  • The Dance Program hosts the American College Dance Festival Association Great Lakes Regional Festival March 13-16. More than 400 students, faculty and guest artists will participate in workshops and master classes. Free public concerts — the Gala Concert, an Informal Concert, a World Dance Concert, and an Interarts and Technology Concert — will be held during the festival.   • The Spring Student Concert, April 10-12, 8 p.m., Lathrop Hall, will present a variety of multimedia, solo and group works. Tickets, information: 262-1691.
  • Chicago-based dance/artist Jan Erkert will be in residence April 13-26. A professor at Columbia College in Chicago, she will teach classes, set a piece on students and perform in the Spring Faculty Concert.
  • New and recent works by guest artist Jan Erkert and faculty including Li Chiao-Ping, Jin-Wen Yu and others will be featured in the Spring Faculty Concert, April 24-26, 8 p.m. Tickets, information: 262-1691.
  • Coordinated by professor Douglas Rosenberg, this year’s annual Festival of Interarts and Technology runs for two nights, May 2-3. The free event features original student works. Information: 262-2871 or 262-1691.
