Dance Department, Arts Institute remember ’60s events with symposium

March 2, 2011

The Dance Department and Arts Institute announce the Sunlight Project and Symposium, a series of 10 events related to Pulitzer Prize-winner David Maraniss’ “They Marched into Sunlight.”

“They Marched Into Sunlight” chronicles two events in October 1967: the ambush of a U.S. battalion by North Vietnamese soldiers and a UW–Madison student riot protesting Dow Chemical.

A collaboration between Maraniss and Robin Becker, a New York-based dance artist, will culminate in a March 26 dance concert presenting two new dance works based on Maraniss’ book: “Into Sunlight” by Becker and “Sunlit Fields” by Jin-Wen Yu, a UW–Madison professor of dance. With the exception of the dance concert, all events are free and open to the public.

The Sunlight Project and Symposium, to be held March 24-26, includes panel discussions, a screening of “Two Days in October” (a documentary based on Maraniss’ book) and the spring Hilldale Lecture, delivered by Maraniss.
