Contest begins Union’s 75th anniversary

To honor the upcoming 75th anniversary of the Memorial Union building, the Wisconsin Union is sponsoring a contest to name a commemorative Babcock ice cream flavor.

“Getting a Babcock ice cream cone at the Union is almost a rite of passage for people who live in — and visit — Madison,” says Julie Vincent, the Union’s assistant director for food and retail. “It is only appropriate that Babcock play such a fun role in our anniversary celebration in honor of the long tradition of ice cream at the Union.”

Since its doors opened on Oct. 5, 1928, Memorial Union has served as a center of social, cultural, educational and recreational activities on campus, and has become a cornerstone of the Madison community. A series of 75th-anniversary events is planned for October through June 2004.

The contest, called the 75th Anniversary Ice Cream Jubilee, begins this month. Entrants will be asked to name a new flavor and provide a brief list of ingredients. Five finalists will be selected, and batches of those flavors will be created for a summer tasting on the Memorial Union Terrace. The winning flavor will be announced during the anniversary kickoff, Oct. 4-5.

To submit a flavor idea, visit any of the Union delis or the Babcock Hall Dairy Store, or enter online: http://www.union.wisc.edu/75. To request an entry form through the mail, contact Maggie Baum at 262-2687. The deadline for entries is Saturday, June 21.
