Composers visit campus for improvisation symposium

Belgian composer/pianist Frederic Rzewski and jazz pianist Marilyn Crispell will offer two free public concerts in conjunction with a School of Music symposium on piano improvisation.

Rzweski, on the faculty of the Conservatoire Royal de Musique in Lie’ge, Belgium, will perform some of his own works at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 6, in Mills Hall of the Mosse Humanities Building.

Crispell, a veteran of improvisational workshops around the world, will draw from her own compositions, plus those of Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane and others, in a concert at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7, in Morphy Hall, Mosse Humanities Building.

Both artists also will work with students in master classes and other events.
