College of Letters and Science announces honors

Gary Sandefur, dean of the College of Letters and Science, announces the winners of the 2007–08 College of Letters and Science Academic Staff Excellence Awards, Advising Awards and Classified Staff Excellence Awards.

These awards are given to recognize the contributions of L&S academic staff and classified staff to the college. The recipients were honored at an awards ceremony on April 17.

The recipients of the Early Career Award are Dianna Murphy, the Language Institute, and Ron Harris, Department of English. In this category, the academic staff member has been in L&S for three to eight years, has a record that demonstrates outstanding performance, shows substantial promise of future contributions and demonstrates a high degree of professionalism.

The Mid-Career Achievement Award goes to two people this year: Ieva Reich, Department of Chemistry, and Scott Mellor, Department of Scandinavian Studies. In this category, the academic staff member has been in the college for seven or more years, demonstrates outstanding performance, leadership and service beyond one’s position, and shows substantial professional competency and the promise of continuing contributions.

The Judith S. Craig Distinguished Service Award goes to Maggie Sullivan, L&S administration. In this category, the recipient must be an L&S academic staff member for 15 or more years. The recipient has a record that demonstrates outstanding service and professionalism to the college and the university throughout one’s career.

L&S Academic Advising Awards go to advisers who show exemplary practices in advising students, development of student potential, contributions beyond the call of duty, working across school and college lines to serve the needs of students, and contributions to the improvement of advising services for students. The faculty recipient is professor Gloria Mari Beffa, Department of Mathematics, and the academic staff recipient is Liane Kosaki, Department of Political Science.

L&S Classified Staff Excellence Awards go to classified staff who have shown outstanding work performance and/or have made a significant impact in terms of the overall value and benefit to specific program goals or to the university. They consistently demonstrate outstanding leadership skills and initiative and provide a positive contribution to the climate of the unit, college or university as a whole. This year’s recipients are Susan Cory, L&S Copy Centers; Susan Barthel, student academic affairs; Shelley Glodowski, Department of Philosophy; Robin Shanahan, Department of English; and Terry Maggio, Department of English.
