Class examines response to Sept. 11

Journalism 417, the magazine writing class, has created a special edition of the Web-based magazine, Online Wisconsin.

The issue, entitled “A Campus Reacts,” is devoted entirely to the campus response to the Sept. 11 attacks on America and the war on terrorism. Its mission is to provide readers with a balanced and engaging portrait of the UW–Madison campus in the context of a nation at war.

The stories on the Web site were reported and written by UW students and focus on how the campus feels about the circumstances, changes, and emotions surrounding the attacks. Stories include topics such as the treatment of women in Afghanistan, changing classroom environment, free speech on campus and the current and historical status of antiwar protests.

Under guidance of instructors and Madison Magazine editors Brian Howell and Brennan Nardi, the reporters thoroughly explore campus dynamics since Sept. 11. The package of stories is set in the context of UW–Madison as a place for liberal politics and strong antiwar sentiments.

Readers may be surprised at what they encounter now. Editor-in-Chief Sarah Goforth says in her editorial, “While our aim with this project was to be more personal than comprehensive, I hope our work does some justice to the depth and complexity of what the events of and since Sept. 11 have meant for our community.”
